Social Network

I have been meaning to watch this movie for quite sometime. But then, something or the other has prevented that from happening. Today, i watched the movie and I have to admit, it is really well made. It brings out a different aspect of a celebrity and somehow i find it more believable. When someone becomes famous, we tend to praise him to the skies or talk about his struggles and usually forget how nasty he was or how many people he forgot in his climb to succeed.

The plot follows Mark's phenomenal rise to success. The story keeps alternating between the past and the present and it is well written. The dialogues are witty and the director tries to depict college life. Some things are of course exaggerated, but considering that most of the scenes stick to the original story, the movie is quite enjoyable.

The movie is not just well made, it also has a nice story line. The screen play is very good and makes sure that you are concentrating on what is happening in the screen. I would recommend it as a one time watch.

I am jumping with joy. Wait a minute - considering the fact that the building is still standing, i guess it was just a phrase i coined. :) Anyway, we (yeah, sigh) got an amazing wedding gift today. It is a kindle!!!!!!! It is lovely and since it is 3G enabled as well, we were able to get on the internet without any issues. :) This was the best gift ever! Thank you Mallik. Now, we are going to fight over something!!! :)

Better days - Goo Goo dolls

A beautiful song. I am peaceful when i listen to this.

And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cuz I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire and love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

So take these words
And sing out loud
Cuz everyone is forgiven now
Cuz tonight's the night the world begins again

And it's someplace simple where we could live
And something only you can give
And thats faith and trust and peace while we're alive
And the one poor child that saved this world
And there's 10 million more who probably could
If we all just stopped and said a prayer for them

So take these words
And sing out loud
Cuz everyone is forgiven now
Cuz tonight's the night the world begins again

I wish everyone was loved tonight
And somehow stop this endless fight
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

So take these words
And sing out loud
Cuz everyone is forgiven now
Cuz tonight's the night the world begins again
Cuz tonight's the night the world begins again

Just go with it

For the uninitiated, this is a new movie starring Adam Sandler and Jenniffer Aniston. I just have one sentence for this one.

Just do not go with it unless you are really bored and have nothing better to do.

Birthday blues

I had a lovely birthday last week. Some people made it quite unforgettable. The best things about the day

1. My beloved's gift and of course his various attempts to get it without me knowing about it. (Considering the fact that we go to the same gym and office, he had a very difficult time)
2. The multiple calls from family and friends - I was very happy to be given their time and love. :)  Everything good everything wonderful does stay back no matter what. Some relationships never change no matter how far away they are
3. The calls and messages that did not come - Well, it reminded me as to how much i have changed and what all i have possibly grown out of. A simple reminder of all that dead and gone.
4. The awesome celebration in office and the cute card -I had changed companies recently and I was very happy that people in the new office remembered my birthday and not only got a cake but also a really lovely card. :)
5. The dinner - What good is a foodies blog without mention about the special meal of the day? I was accompanied by 3 more equally crazy people to this place called Turquoise in Koramangala. The food was yummy.

Thank you all for everything. I am sure I will have a lovely year ahead.

Sunny's - Indira Nagar

The last time i went to Sunny's, I left without even placing an order as I felt dizzy all of a sudden. We have judiciously avoided the place after that for i felt it was jinxed .Yesterday on a sudden impulse we went there for dinner and enjoyed every bit of it.

The food was well made. Starting from the tofu starter we ordered to the main course, every dish was like a work of art. The presentation, the taste and the service, all of it was flawless. I loved the baked cheese dish I had. The spinach was cooked just right and the chef had managed to bring in a medley of flavours to the dish.

The place has a nice ambience. On a sunday night, there were mostly families dining together and they were able to maintain the ambience without too much trouble. In most crowded restaurants, you inevitably are disturbed by other patrons, but here it is not the case. We were seated inside and the temperature of the room was good.

The service was quick. The dishes came quite fast and waiters appeared magically when we wanted them. We had a quiet and a peaceful dinner.

However, all nice things apart, the place is quite expensive. They charge multiple taxes on the already highly priced menu and so it does lighten your pocket considerably. But if you have a reason to celebrate, this would be the right place to. :) Do not go here if you are on a budget.

Pirates of the Caribbean : On stranger tides

I love Johnny Depp. He is one of those heroes whose most movies I have liked or so I thought until a fateful Saturday.

I had to sit through the horror that was POTC 4. I really liked the previous movies in the series and I am even guilty of watching a few scenes multiple times to enjoy every thing about it. But this movie, was a big let down. 4 major reasons why :
1. You dont have most of the characters who gave a wonderful flavour to the other parts : I missed Will Turner, The black pearl and of course the flying dutchman. The magic in the current ship was so lame! Not to mention the captain and his so called first mate. Penelope Cruz has been wasted in this movie.
2. You dont have a gripping story line : So you want to find the fountain of youth. Why cant you have a gripping story line around it?! Characters pop in from the middle of nowhere and you can easily predict what is going to happen in the next scene. What happens in the fountain of  youth seems like something copied from a cheesy romantic flick. Sigh.
3. You dont have stunning action scenes : I was really sad to see pathetic action scenes. When Jack Sparrow meets Jack Sparrow, there could have been a lot more action. The part where Jack escapes from the English was ok, but it was complete downhill from there on.
4. Wit and Sarcasm - what is that?! I guess the director got bored with having too many smart dialogues in the previous parts that he decided to do away with all but a few of them in this part.

This was definitely a strange tide for one of my favorite series. I really hope they recover because the last scene shows the possibility of a sequel. I can only wish for it to be better than this one!

Letting go

Our paths crossed
In more ways than one
I attach you not with a name or a face
but just the thought
of someone or something i someday did trust
All of you together as just one
That someday did mean a lot

Of a million dreams or even one
that you made me have
Of all the hours i spent
happy, sad or just emotionless
I forget not
I remember everything
small and big
I remember most instances
that made a difference then

Now all I have are those memories
For life my friend has taken us
through separate paths
A few i lost recently
A few ways parted long back
But what is long
in a really short life
I do wonder

I realized long back
that let go of all
I never can
Neither can i forgive
Nor can i forget
A betrayal of trust

I care not whether it was known
or unknown
For all i know
was the sense of loss
the sense of utter and complete betrayal
I know not all your stories
Maybe i wish i did.

I want not to turn back time
Seldom does it achieve anything
I just want to leave my mark
in places that matter
and not look back and regret
the ways that parted

I want to let go
I really do
I want not demons from a long lost past
I want not angels forgotten and abandoned
I just want the present
and the sense to make the best
of what can be the future.

Life is what you make it - Preeti Shenoy

I read Preeti's blog from time to time. I came across her when i was blog hopping. I was really curious to read her book and when i went to flipkart in an attempt to get rid of my boredom, i was surprised to find her second book for Rs.60.  I was so surprised and also happy. I ordered it and finished it in one sitting. It is definitely a well written book and the story is also engrossing. I could not stop reading it and sat up till quite late after a long time to finish a book. :)

The story is about Ankita, a smart and an ambitious girl who has everything in life and slowly loses it all. In her, the author has brought to life a character that most of us would be able to relate to. We witness her growing up through college and then enter an MBA program in a premier institute giving up many things in the process. We watch as she becomes very focused and starts scaling new heights and then fall into the most pathetic state possible - that of wanting to end her life, all because of this strange disease. The book tries to spread awareness about the bipolar disorder and it succeeds in doing the same. (Atleast in my case, i did read up about the disease. :)) The rest of the plot is about how she grows up in more ways than one when faced with adversity in her life.

I will not say that this is a very great book that one should not miss or that it will change your life. I will only recommend it because it is an engrossing read and it does depict the life and experiences of a young adult in India. I found those parts quite real and beautiful. Do give it a chance. She has a way with words. She has also inspired me to work harder on my book too. :)

Despicable me

Well, if you are thinking i am crazy to admit i am despicable in a public forum, it implies that you have not watched this movie. :) I think by now most of the regular readers (if there are any) know that i love animated movies. The one i watched yesterday was Despicable me. The title caught my eye when the movie hit the Bangalore theatres, but i was not able to go and watch it. Yesterday, i finally had my chance.

The plot is simple. Gru wants to be a super villain. His achievements till date are anything but spectacular and with his accomplice Dr.Nefarious, he plans to shrink the moon and steal it. His plans are in jeopardy because of the younger villain Vector (who commits crimes with magnitude and direction. :D) who steals the shrink ray from Gru himself.(literally under his nose)

Gru adopts 3 kids who have access to Vector's house (they sell cookies) and how they transform him forms the rest of the story. The movie is quite engaging and it has a  lot of cute and nice moments. If you like animated movies, then i would suggest this to you. If not, please avoid it as  you might find the oh so cute moments difficult to digest. :)

Fishes with slacking lines

If the line goes slack, the fish can spit the hook out. I heard this line in a lecture i was attending. My mind immediately painted a graphic image of a hard working fisherman who has done all the right things at the right time and then suddenly lets things go right towards the end as he is either too exhausted or because he thinks he has worked hard enough till now and the work is enough to sustain him.

Whatever the reason, he loses something he should have rightfully got. I see a lot of smart people who are no different from the fisherman. They want the hard work they did in the initial years of their life to take care fo them for the rest of their life. They dont want to work anymore.

I somehow cannot accept that. What is the point on riding on a wave of past glory? Isnt who you are right now more important? I subscribe to the philosophy that a man/woman who cannot identify areas of improvement and learning has given up the line even if the fish is caught. :)

5 lessons i learnt from scrabble

It is funny that i relate even the most random things to life and start getting all philosophical. This time around, it is to the game of scrabble. So here I go again listing 5 lessons scrabble teaches you.If you like this one, you might like the lists i made of Excel, Powerpoint and of course my dear SAS

1. You can plan all you want in advance taking in to account complex scenarios, but when faced with your seven tiles you realize you are restricted in more ways than one by the moves of those around you. Moral : No matter how much you plan, as long as there is dependency on the other, you cannot expect your plans to be executed

2. In the board like in life there are only specific things you can do though you are fooled by the illusion of freedom. You are never free to do as you please as there are multiple restrictions at each level. :)

3. You might be very very brilliant (with words or just plain brilliant) but that does not mean you are going to be able to get a high score and beat a dumb and lucky enemy. Luck makes a world of difference

4. If you are not placing the right word at the right place at the right time, you are not going to be ahead of the game. Not only do you have to watch out, you also have to be smart enough to recognize an opportunity when you see one.

5. Sometimes you get so engrossed in the game and in winning it that you forget to enjoy what you do in the process. This is the point where i get preachy and say life is better when you are able to pause and savor the moment at times before it passes you by

I am reminded of a quote a very old friend of mine had in her office desk. I don't remember where she is now or what she is doing, but i remember this quote too well - "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it is also about learning to dance in the rain" I know that this quote is unrelated to the whole post except perhaps the last point, but since i have insisted on winning in the rest and it is only in the last i talk about living, i thought i might add this. :)

The chosen path

This road they said,
Had not been taken before.
I knew that it was new
just for me.
Seasoned warriors must exist
who created the route sometime
maybe long long ago

I decided to believe
and simply take a beautiful plunge.
Up ahead I went with a lot of hope
The grass was greener
The life much better
till i began to look around

Ah sweet ignorance - how i miss thee
Cynical and sarcastic is now the way
I can easily look
and there i see, that
Maybe the roads differ
maybe the ends differ
but nature dear nature,
seldom does change.

You see greed, you see malice,
you see hatred, you see jealousy.
You see love, you see sacrifice
For thats the way of life.
And somewhere along the path,
it is a decision of choice
between simply the lesser of the two evils.
For evil cannot be vanquished
just simply ignored and not bowed down to.

Our new babies

Nope. I am not going to have a kid. I love sensationalizing stuff though.
Our new babies :

And this is a better look at where they stay (with all the lights n all)

I have to make sure they are fed properly and on time. :) We should rather. :D

We have to thank Vinay, John and Prajakta for getting us the fish tank as a wedding gift. They let us buy the fish and also to decide what all stuff we wanted inside the tank. :) We had fun deciding what all we wanted and how we wanted the same. :D

Disclaimer : I love music and i love food.

So we end in Opus for an afternoon lunch, because of the two points mentioned above. To be nice and fair, let me just list the five things i did not like about the place or rather that put me off that day noon.

1. Service : As we had not opted for the have all you want buffet, nobody even bothered to attend to us. We had to scream ourselves hoarse before someone came to our aid
2. Loud Music : well, you know why had to scream hoarse now! I cannot take it when someone screws up Hotel California without a second thought and calls it good music. I just want to go and kill all those involved
3. Overpriced food : For vegetarians the choice was either potato, paneer or mushroom. If you are health conscious, there is nothing you can eat here! Most good restaurants have something on their menu for people who are health conscious. This one does not even try.
4. Eating in the heat is not at all cool. The restaurant was quite hot!!
5. Location : Once you cross all that traffic and get over to that place, and then after eating you get out and weave through those crazy roads, you will understand why i am saying this.

But then let me also list some 3 things that maybe someone else who goes there at a better time and place might like

1. Rs.888 and you can eat and drink all you want. You get stuff like pork and beef. Well, if you are a non vegetarian who also drinks, this could be heaven for you.
2. Good music or perhaps the chance to sing along with a karaoke machine
3. The chance to spend long hours listening to good music and just sit and do nothing in a cool place with a good ambience

Unaccustomed earth

I have been trying to write short stories for quite a while now. I have a collection of around 10-15 previously unpublished ones with me. After i read Jhumpa Lahiri's previous book, "Interpreter of Maladies" i was inspired to continue writing and editing. This one, only managed to egg me on.

The first story in the collection beautifully details a father daughter story and also that of a man wanting a normal life. I am not sure which one in this collection is my favorite- whether it is the story  of a bengali woman and an adopted brother in Hell heaven or that of a Sang, or that of the brother and sister in "Only goodness". They were definitely better than the stories in the second half of the book dedicated to Hema and Kaushik.

But that was mainly because the author demonstrates quite beautifully how a really long story is not required to bring out the depth of a character in the same. I loved the collection and I am glad I ordered the same from flipkart. An enchanting, deep and at times disturbing read that brings alive the many characters in its pages to an attentive reader.

I love movies with happy endings and musicals with a lot of energy. Rio is both. The story is about a bird raised from birth by a human. He is the last male of his species and he is taken to Rio to mate with the last female, Jewel. The two do not get along as Jewel is a fierce and highly independent bird wishing for freedom while our hero blu loves his owner and his captivity. They are kidnapped by the bird smugglers and escape from their clutches.
However, they are still chained together and jewel cannot fly away to her rain forests as she is tied to the flightless blu. We follow the two on their journey to remove the chain and also watch as Blu falls more in love with a now responsive jewel.
The 3D effects were quite decent and i loved the songs in the movie. I would recommend this one heartily for a nice peaceful happy watch. Lovely movie with good visuals.

Jaadugar Anand

I last watched a magic show as a kid and after i went to college and became the cynical "You know what, i know how that is done", i never bothered to go to one. However, yesterday was different. Jaadugar Anand was in town and I went to watch his show with two other grown up kids and a small one.

I liked most of it! I was surprised because i thought that the disbelieving me would not enjoy it as much. The show was good. The only flipside being the location, the townhall with its broken handles and slightly uncomfortable chairs. :)

The magician was a show man and was exaggerative at places. But above all, it was one evening when i went back to being a kid again. (Not that i ever was one according to my mom) It was magical (atleast some parts of it. :) )

Source code

Someone above really is angry with me. Or should I say wants to egg me on to write? I watched source code last week and I did not like it much. I also, did not want to write a review about the same. But as luck would have had it, i went to watch the same movie again with my team and so i am forced to write about it in detail.

I am sure that a lot of you would want to watch the movie so i would not comment about the story as such. The main crux is this. The hero is a army helicopter captain who is part of a program called the source code which involves him travelling into the past to glean more details about the same. He can stay only for 8 minutes and in that the objective of the program is get as much information as possible.

We watch the struggle of the hero to understand what happened to him and his desire to save the world(the second part is debatable). The movie gets boring at places and you really want his 8 minutes to end when he keeps going back and forth. The characterization is not deep enough and there are a lot of loose ends in the movie.

For a plot that was so strong and could have been more interesting, the story fails at times. I would recommend it as it is definitely much better than the other things you usually get to watch, but I would also stress on the fact that it is not a completely well made movie. It could have been made much much better. The director tries to appeal to both the intellect and the emotion and that is what i think causes the disconnect that is so obvious.

I love fantasy and of course fantasy movies. This was a good time pass. It has all the right elements in the right proportions. You have an angry dad-son relationship. You witness the growth of an individual and you get to see a handsome hero fall in love with a mortal.

I loved the movie and I would not mind watching it again. Since i seriously think you should watch and enjoy it, i will not comment about it too much in detail. :) Do watch the same and do not over analyse it. :)
